Nicole Webley – County Call Up!

Girl Football Week has been a great week to recognise the females that play within our league and give them the recognition they deserve. Today we hear all about Nicole Webley!

Nicole has been a huge part of our league for many years now, formally playing for Albion in the Community and more recently for The Village FC. Nicole has shown huge talent and commitment within the disability game and worked her way into the Sussex County FA Disability Representative Team. Being the only female on the team has not stopped Nicole from excelling and becoming a worthy Captain.

Jade Harker (SDFL Secretary) has this to say “Nicole has always stood out to me as a confident and skillful player. The County Disability Team has a mixture of disabilities including Players with CP, Mental Health Wellbeing, Partially Sighted and Deaf Players, meaning communication skills along with football skills were needed in order for the team to continue to progress and Nicole was key to this being so successful. Watching Nicole lead this team on and off the pitch has been fantastic. Nicole is a player that younger players should look up too and I wish her all the best this season”

Nicole recently joined the Village FC Turn Up and Play Sessions. These are sessions that run once a week at Worthing Leisure Center, set up in partnership with the Sussex County FA and South Downs Leisure to encourage adults with disabilities to get involved with football.

Sally Honey (South Downs Leisure Health and Wellbeing Manger) added “South Downs Leisure are pleased to be involved n such a fantastic project, supporting Nicole’s achievement and the commitment and drive of all the players and coaches involved in the disability sessions. As a Charitable Trust we are committed to getting more people, more active, more often and these sessions are a great way of encouraging an inclusive range of players onto the pitch”

Not only does Nicole play Disability Football but this season she has also embarked on a fresh challenge, playing mainstream football for Worthing United Ladies FC. It was also this season that saw Nicole take part in the Sussex County FA Ladies Representative Team Trials and was selected for the up and coming squad, making Nicole first female player to represent the Sussex Disability and Women’s County Team.

Pam Chandler and Ian Hickley- Smith have both coached, managed and mentored Nicole as a player over the past few years and they have said “We are delighted that one of the most promising players from the SDFL, Nicole has successfully been selected to represent the Sussex County Women’s Representative Team. This means Nicole will be the first female player to represent a Disability Rep Team and a Mainstream County Women’s  Team at the same time and this is a great achievement”
